Design Nerd Jam 5.6 – GROW JAM
Grow Jam
art + urban agriculture + urban environment
Friday June 3, 2011
7-10 pm
Creekside Community Centre, 1 Athletes Way
The Design Nerds teamed up with Other Sights for Artist’s Projects to bring this amazing jam. Grow focused on creating an urban agriculture lab in South East False Creek. Participants gathered in our new jam space at Vancouver Hive to explore potential platforms for growing in post-industrial urban space.
The evening began with a presentation from the Grow Group, which focused on the urban agriculture lab in South East False Creek. This served as the departure point for the jam session – answering the question: What structures can support growing in post-industrial sites? The jam focused on creating sketches and maquettes to develop platforms for growing food.
Grow is a public art project that acts as a public forum, teaching tool and creative laboratory for ecological and social sustainability practices. This project explores Vancouver’s expanding identity as a sustainable city through the site of SEFC. Through a series of walks, workshops, and creative experiments in urban agriculture, Grow engages creative practitioners, interest groups and local community members in urban agriculture activities that will improve local food security, build local knowledge, and provide inventive solutions for growing food in the urban environment.
This project is presented by Other Sights for Artist’s Projects with the support of the City of Vancouver 125th grants program and the Canada Council for the Arts.
